Senior lawyer Debra Tumbach joined the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) in 1991. She provides legal advice and representation to the ASBA and school boards across the province. As senior lawyer, Debra is also responsible for the administration of the legal services department and overseeing the provision of legal services to school boards.
Debra’s day-to-day practice includes providing general legal service, advice and assistance to school boards in the areas of labour and employment law, contractual reviews, the preparation of agreements, collective agreement review and interpretation, collective bargaining issues, policy reviews, the development of assessments respecting the impact of government legislation and policy changes, the provision of advice and direction regarding human rights issues and complaints, statutory interpretations, privacy issues, and the provision of general advice and directions on a variety of educational issues. Debra is also responsible for preparing and appearing on behalf of boards before courts, arbitration boards, the Labour Relations Board, the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission, and any other administrative bodies or tribunals for which such appearances may be required.
Debra has also prepared and presented numerous seminars on a variety of privacy and school-based issues to member boards and associations throughout the province.
