ASBA offers orientation to new trustees/boards
With new trustees coming on board Oct. 15, the ASBA is offering the following orientation services.
Orientation booklet describes role and work of school boards
In an election year, the ASBA prepares an orientation book for new and returning trustees. The 2007 edition, which covers the role of school boards, basic education funding, recent legislative changes, acronyms and jargon and Frequently Asked Legal Questions, is scheduled to be mailed to trustees on Oct. 24. Copies will be provided to jurisdiction offices and posted on the ASBA website.
Attend orientation workshops in each of the
Zones
Education consultants Dr. Leroy Sloan and Terry Gunderson, director of communications Suzanne Lundrigan and an ASBA lawyer will offer day-long workshops for new trustees in five cities. This workshop will cover the role of the school board, the legal framework within which the school board operates and an introduction to media relations. Registration is free and on a “drop-in” basis; however for planning purposes, we ask you to contact

January new trustee/chair workshop takes place in Edmonton
In an election year, the ASBA hosts a special two-day workshop for new trustees and new board chairs. This year’s workshop will take place Jan. 20-22, 2008 in Edmonton at the Sutton Place Hotel. Details will follow closer to the date.
Mentorship program for new trustees
As a new offering for the 2007-2010 term, the ASBA will pair experienced trustees with new trustees. A call will be put out to see who is interested in participating either as a mentor or a mentee. We hope to launch this program in January 2008.
Last call for ASBA transportation survey responses
With a goal of getting survey responses from every school board, the transportation committee is most of the way to its target. Forty-four school boards have filled out the online survey about transportation issues. Contact
