  1. What problem were you trying to address when you launched this program?
    To celebrate leadership, improvement and positive attitudes.

  2. Describe the program/project?
    “ I am FX” Program, prepared by the Peer Leadership Team and funded by the Student Union. We have our own logo, letterhead and clothing. We host an extensive semi-annual initiative at St. Francis that celebrates more than 200 students, many of whom don’t usually get acknowledged. We call it the “I am FX” recognition program. This program awards students for (1) consistent effort regardless of grade, (2) significant improvement in attendance, work habits, or grades or (3) outstanding cooperation and classroom citizenship. These are the students who eventually become the backbone of our society.Goals:
    • To enhance a positive and safe school environment.
    • To boost school pride, spirit and self-confidence.
    • To recognize students who don’t normally get recognized for their important contributions to the school community.
    Process:
    1. All teachers identify students for excellence in the following categories.
    • Consistent effort, outstanding spirit/leadership, outstanding improvement.
    1. Names are collected and sorted for awards. We have four award levels.
    • Bronze: one nomination in one category.
    • Silver: two nominations or one nomination with honors.
    • Gold: three nominations or two with honors.
    • Platinum: four nominations or three with honors.

Recognition Awards:
Students in all levels are recognized with a visual display, a personal letter of congratulations, a letter of congratulations to their parents, an award ceremony with juice and snacks and in-school award coupons as listed below. Other awards, to be teacher negotiated, depend on award level. Students who receive a Platinum recognition award receive the following:

    • Two homework extensions or cancellations.
    • Five early class dismissal coupons.
    • Two library passes.
    • Excused from one quiz or chapter exam.
    • Your lowest mark erased from your class average.
    • Registration priority.
    • An “I am FX” t-shirt.
  1. How did you involve your school council/community in developing this approach?
    All teachers participate by naming/nominating students. Non-certified staff are encouraged to participate too.

    200 students received recognition and awards

  3. What would you do to improve this program?
    Nominate more students.
