By-election announcement reflects commitment to locally-elected school boards - ASBA
Release date: August 19, 1999
In the wake of today's announcement that Minister of Learning Dr. Lyle Oberg had disbanded the Calgary Board of Education, ASBA President Lois Byers commended the minister for committing to hold a by-election to elect a new school board to govern Calgary's public system as soon as possible.
"We acknowledge the
difficulties the Calgary Board of Education, elected last year, was having.
We had hoped the board could resolve its difficulties," said Byers. "Unfortunately,
that was not the case."
The minister of learning has appointed Mr. George Cornish to serve as Official
Trustee to oversee operations at the Calgary Board of Education, pending a by-election
to be held no later than March 31, 2000.
"By announcing a by-election immediately, Dr. Oberg has demonstrated he understands and values the importance of locally-elected school boards," said Byers. "Throughout this difficult period, Calgarians have demonstrated their keen interest in the stewardship of Calgary's public education system. A by-election will give Calgarians the opportunity to elect their school board and to shape the public school system that serves their children."
