Province's school boards in Edmonton

November 21-23 for ASBA General Meeting

More than 400 Alberta school trustees and administrators will gather at Edmonton's Westin Hotel (10135 - 100 Street) for the Alberta School Boards Association's (ASBA) Fall General Meeting. Premier Ralph Klein's presentation of the first-ever $10,000 Premier's Award for School Board Excellence will be a highlight. Twenty-six school boards are vying for the Xerox-sponsored award, which will be presented by the Premier at noon on November 23.

Trustees at the ASBA's Fall General Meeting participate in professional development sessions, network with colleagues and set the policies that guide the ASBA's work.

School boards set ASBA policy positions
Association business is scheduled from 1:30 to 7 p.m. on November 22. Member boards will debate the merit of adopting the nine new policy statements outlined in the enclosed Association Policies Bulletin.

Professional development sessions for trustees Nov. 22 and Nov. 23
9 a.m. to noon, Nov. 22
Rod Love, Ralph Klein's former executive assistant, will present a session on government relations. There will be concurrent sessions on communications planning, the art of networking, school councils and team building.

9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Nov. 23
A presentation by Deputy Minister of Learning Maria David Evans and a session on the new Youth Criminal Justice Act will be among the workshops presented.

Awards presentations
The ASBA President's Award and the ASBA Edwin Parr Award will be presented to five outstanding first-year teachers at 7:30 p.m. on November 21. The ASBA Friends of Education Award will be presented at noon on November 22. The ASBA Honorary Life Membership and the new Premier's Award for School Board Excellence will be presented at noon on November 23.
