ASBA encourages Albertans to think about running for trustee

Release date: August 16, 2001

With a month to go before the September 17 deadline to file nomination papers for school board elections, the president of the association representing all school boards in Alberta challenged Albertans to get involved in public education by running for the office of trustee.

"Be part of the democratic process that keeps the public in public education and run for trustee," said Alberta School Boards Association President Lois Byers. "The ASBA wants Albertans to get more involved in the democratic process that sees each community elect the people who will shape the local education system to meet the needs of their town, city or rural region."

To Albertans considering taking up the challenge of trusteeship, Byers said, "serving as a school trustee is an opportunity to guide the education of Alberta's 560,000 students. We invite you to get more involved."

Alberta's school boards shape today's students into tomorrow's citizens; control the direction and quality of local public education; oversee million dollar budgets and make decisions that impact the economic, social and cultural life of a community. In short, the local school board's decisions affect all residents, whether they have children in school or not, said Byers.

"It is the most rewarding work I have ever done," said Byers who, after nine years as a trustee in the Vegreville area, is not planning to run for re-election.
