Battle River trustee to lead association that represents all Alberta school boards

Highlights ASBA FGM November 18-20

Michele Mulder, a trustee with the Battle River School Division, will serve as the new president of the Alberta School Boards Association for the next 18 months. Mulder was unchallenged in her bid for the presidency of the association which represents all Alberta’s school boards. She previously served three years as vice-president of the ASBA and has been a school trustee for 12 years. Mulder and her husband Henry live in the Holden area with their two teenage children.

The provincial labour situation poses the biggest challenge in the coming months, said Mulder as she assumed the reins of the ASBA. “School boards are faced with the challenge of balancing the needs of the students and communities they serve with their desire to be fair employers – all within the constraints of their budgets.” A photograph of President Mulder is available for downloading on the ASBA web page http://www.asba.ab.ca in the media section.

Maureen Kubinec, a trustee with the Pembina Hills Regional Division, will serve as the ASBA’s vice-president for the next 18 months. She was unchallenged in her bid for the vice-presidency.
In other business, Alberta’s school boards, who met in Edmonton November 18 to 20, honored these outstanding first year teachers with the prestigious Edwin Parr Award:

The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association and the Alberta Police Based Victim Services Association Branch received the Friends of Education Award in recognition of their significant contribution to education in Alberta. And the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders were presented with the ASBA President’s Award in recognition of their programs aimed at encouraging students to stay in school and to make positive life choices.
