School boards association asks ATA - do not disrupt diploma exams
Release date: January 14, 2002
In the face of imminent teacher strikes, the Alberta School Boards Association
today made public its request to the Alberta Teachers Association to not
disrupt diploma exams.
Last week, on behalf of the students we all serve, I wrote ATA President
Larry Booi asking that Alberta teachers not take job action that would disrupt
diploma exams, said ASBA President Michele Mulder.
Diploma exams culminate years of study and preparation by students and
the teachers who have taught them. The outcomes on these exams have a huge impact
on a students future course and we ask that nothing occur that would hurt
student performance on these tests, said Mulder.
As of January 14, 2002, five teacher locals in school jurisdictions serving
more than 113,228 students, are in a position to strike.
There is no good time for a strike, said Mulder. Students
lose out when teachers arent in classrooms, and school boards ask that
all involved keep the students in their hearts and minds as they make decisions
in the coming days and weeks.
