School boards gather in Edmonton for ASBA’s annual meeting November 17 to 19

Four hundred and fourty-seven delegates, representing 62 school boards, will meet in Edmonton November 17 to 19 for the Alberta School Boards Associationís annual general meeting. Policy making will be the focus of this meeting, as school boards debate adopting new positions on emerging issues and develop the ASBAís presentation to the Alberta Learning Commission. The meeting takes place at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton.

The proposed policy positions school boards will consider are posted on the ASBA website.These are among the issues school boards will debate:- reaffirmation of current ASBA policy that local collective bargaining is the most desirable and beneficial form of negotiating collective agreements (Sponsor St. Albert Protestant Schools)
- a call to put more emphasis on Canadian History in curriculum (Sponsor Calgary Board of Education)
- a call for funding for the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) program (Sponsor: Red Deer Catholic Regional Division No. 39)
- a call for enhanced government commitment to providing adequate funding to meet the increasing needs of mild, moderate and severe disabled students (Sponsor: Elk Island Public Schools)
- Announcement of 2002 winner of the Premierís Award for School Board Innovation
and Excellence
