Statement from the President of the Alberta School Boards Association, Michele Mulder
on the good faith agreement between the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Teachers' Association and the Alberta School Boards Association

Release date: April 19, 2002

Students win with this agreement. This agreement returns to students all the activities that so enrich school and education life in this province – for this I am very grateful.

Our board of directors voted unanimously to recommend this agreement to our members because we believe it puts students first.

Hope, and commitment to students, brought us here today.

This agreement reflects the commitment of all parties, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Alberta government and Alberta School Boards Association to find solutions to the current impasse on behalf of the students we all serve.

Everyone gave to achieve this agreement, and I want to take a moment to thank the gentlemen on this podium with me for their willingness to look for solutions – thank you Larry and thank you Lyle.

The Alberta School Boards Association joins you wholeheartedly as we take what I believe is the first step in the journey back to the cooperation that we have enjoyed over the years and which I know has contributed immeasurably to creating the outstanding education system in this province.

I look forward to the promise of the wide-ranging education commission and to working with the government and the Alberta Teachers’ Association to help set the scope and direction for this commission, which will explore the issues raised by teachers, parents, school boards, the public and students with regard to what it is we hope and dream for public education.

And indeed at the end of the day students, quality public education and hopes and dreams are what our endeavors are all about.
