$60 million cash infusion a good first step, says ASBA President Michele Mulder

News the government is boosting public education to the top of its agenda lit a spark of excitement and energy among school boards attending the Alberta School Boards Association’s Fall General Meeting, says ASBA President Michele Mulder. Learning Minister Dr. Lyle Oberg made the statement at the ASBA’s Nov. 18 Fall General Meeting while unveiling a plan to invest $60 million dollars in funding to school boards – more good news for students in Alberta schools.
School boards gave the minister of learning a standing ovation after his speech
to thank him for the $60 million. “We have worked tirelessly to encourage
the government to begin to address the $142 million
hang-over from the arbitrated settlement – this is a good first step.
It’s evidence Dr. Oberg has been in there pitching for students and their
needs – and we thank him for those efforts,” said Mulder.
That public education will top the government agenda was most welcome news. “As advocates for public education, hearing that public education is at the top of the list is the most heartening news we’ve received in a long time. I believe it is a harbinger of great things to come. Alberta has a great public education system today. Imagine what we will achieve when the provincial government throws the full force of its capacity and energy at taking a great public education system even further.”
