Alberta School Boards Association hosts three day conference July 3-5

Justin Trudeau to address Canadian school boards in Calgary in keynote speech

Over 400 school trustees and senior administrators from across Canada will converge in Calgary for the Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) Congress 2007. Ron Liepert, Alberta’s education minister, is welcoming the delegates at the opening ceremonies on July 3 at 4 p.m. prior to Justin Trudeau’s keynote speech  Trudeau has a bachelor of education from the University of British Columbia and is working on a master’s degree in environmental geography from McGill University. He will be representing the Liberal party in the next federal election in the Montreal riding of Papineau. Media are welcome to attend. All events take place at the Westin Hotel and Metropolitian Conference Centre (320 – 4th Avenue).  The Congress conference schedule is posted on the ASBA website.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS  
Tuesday July 3
Metro Matters: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dr. Rudy Crew, Superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Fla. and former Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, is a keynote speaker from 9 to 11 a.m.  Crew is known for eliminating low-performing schools and increasing academic achievement for all students. Metro Matters is a session exploring the issues facing metro and urban school boards.

Opening ceremonies with Justin Trudeau and Education Minister Ron Liepert: 4 p.m.
Justin Trudeau is expected to address issues regarding public education and youth. Trudeau and Ron Liepert are available to meet with the media for questions following their opening remarks.

Thursday July 5
Strategies to reduce bullying:  10 a.m.
Sandra Woitas, a long-time educator and tireless advocate for the needs of Edmonton's most disadvantaged students, leads a plenary on the topic of bullying. Currently, Woitas is on a three year secondment to Alberta Education as part of the cross ministry Family Violence and anti-Bullying Initiative.

Lieutenant Governor Norman Kwong addresses the closing banquet: 7:30 p.m. 

The ASBA is celebrating its 100th year of service to school boards and is hosting this conference as part of its centennial celebrations.
