School boards meet in Edmonton

More than 425 trustees and senior staff from Alberta’s francophone, public and separate school boards will meet November 22-24  for the Alberta School Boards Association annual meeting at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton. Media are welcome to attend. Check in at the registration desk for a media kit.

Meeting highlights 
Sunday, November 22
Opening and awards ceremony: 7:30 p.m.
The Alberta School Boards Association will honor six outstanding first-year teachers from across the province. Congratulations to:  Melissa Isaac, High Prairie Elementary School, High Prairie School Division No. 48; Mallory McNelly, Edgerton School, Buffalo Trail Public Schools; Nancy Rennie, Leo Nickerson School, St. Albert PSSD No. 6; Jana Kemmere, Olds Junior/Senior High School, Chinook’s Edge School Division No. 73; Nancy Espetveidt, Bearspaw School, Rocky View School Division No. 41 and Ricardo Avelar, Winston Churchill High School, Lethbridge School District No. 51.

Monday, November 23
Policy and business session: 9:00 a.m.
School boards will debate policy positions.
Keynote speaker: 1:15 p.m.
Ian Hill of Let them be kids will give the keynote address.

Tuesday, November 24
Hon. Dave Hancock Minister of Education speaks at 8:10 a.m.
Panel presentations through the day
Three students (9:00 a.m.); two former Alberta Teachers’ Association presidents (10:45 a.m.) and a former minister of education (1:00p.m.) will give school boards advice about the role of school trustees.
