Presidents of organizations representing school boards and school councils meet with ministers of education and culture re Bill 44

Release date: May 12, 2009

Heather Welwood, president of the Alberta School Boards Association, will meet this morning with the Hon. Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit and the Hon. Dave Hancock, Minister of Education to ask that Section 11.1 be removed from Bill 44.  Marilyn Sheptycki, president of the Alberta School Councils’ Association, will join Welwood in the meeting.

The proposed Section 11.1 of Bill 44 will require advance notice be given to a parent about how and when a controversial issue might be taught in the classroom. The ASBA and ASCA oppose including this section in the legislation.

The two presidents will reiterate the message that parental rights are already well protected under the School Act and that the Section 11.1 provisions will be costly to implement and create unnecessary and nearly impossible to accommodate administrative requirements.

Welwood and Sheptycki will be available for comment after 1 p.m today.
