ASBA President to report outcomes of provincial meeting re impact of 2010 budget on Alberta schools
Release date: March 19, 2010
Leaders of Alberta’s school boards will meet in Edmonton March 22 to talk about how the 2010 budget is affecting students and schools in their communities. “Our goal is to get a sense of the impact next year’s funding will have on the students we educate. We have asked school boards to share potential solutions to the challenges they are facing locally,” said Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) President Heather Welwood.
The ASBA is collecting information with regards to:
- School boards financial position for 2009/10 year.
How many boards project a deficit? - Impact of arbitrator’s ruling giving teachers a 5.99 per cent salary when government has only provided funding for a 4.82 per cent increase.
How much does this represent? - Impact of a projected 3 per cent teacher salary increase for 2010/11 when the government has provided no funding for this increase in the 2010/11 provincial budget.
How much does this represent? - Impact of provincial education funding levels being held at 2009/10 levels given other rising costs (i.e.) other staff salaries; cost of living projected to increase by 1 per cent.

This meeting will be closed to media; however, Welwood will be available to speak with reporters from 4:15 p.m. to 5 in the lobby of the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel at 10155-105 Street.
