ASBA’s statement on government’s announcement of temporary funding reduction

“Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) and member school boards recognize the fiscal reality and unprecedented challenges due to COVID-19. In the interest of the education system, locally elected school board trustees must be involved in all decisions, particularly those that have significant impacts on students and valued education staff.

Our trustees are elected by their local communities to ensure the best education possible for all students in Alberta, while remaining accountable to full community. School boards and division staff have been working tirelessly to provide for ongoing learning, so students do not fall behind.

Parents and the public look to their trustees to lead during these challenging times. A strong education system for all students, ensuring parents’ voices and school community voice, remain at the forefront of trustee’s decisions. School boards are now in the process of identifying the full impacts this announcement will have on staff and students.”
