ASBA’s member trustees elect a new President and Vice-president.

 

November 24, 2021, Edmonton, AB —As part of Alberta School Board Association’s (ASBA) 2021 Fall General Meeting (FGM), school board trustee members elected Marilyn Dennis as President and Shali Baziuk as Vice-president. President Dennis serves as a school board trustee with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), while Vice-president Baziuk serves as a trustee with Rocky View Schools (RVS).

President Dennis is serving her second term with CBE where she served as Vice Chair and then as Board Chair.  Before becoming a trustee, she worked for an education-based non-profit for several years and enjoyed a rewarding career in the oil and gas sector.

Building strong communities in support of children’s success is at the heart of President Dennis’ work; she is passionate about excellence in education. She spent over 13 years supporting young people in their pursuit of academic, athletic and artistic excellence by taking on various leadership roles including School Council Chair, Parents’ Association President, Treasurer and Fundraising Director.

President Dennis is committed to positioning ASBA and school board members as an influential voice in education; as President, she will advocate, elevate and collaborate.

Vice-president Baziuk is serving her second term with Rocky View School Division. As a proud resident of Chestermere and a parent of two elementary school-age children, she has a keen interest in ensuring education is relevant, accessible and affordable. Vice-president Baziuk has been an active member of Chestermere’s public school system, serving as School Council Chair, and participating in meetings and engagement opportunities.

In addition to holding a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a public relations diploma, she brings a wealth of experience in managing teams, projects, budgets and contracts in various industries across western Canada.

Vice-president Baziuk has 25 years of progressive operations management skills with a track record of developing and managing high performing teams. In her role as trustee, Vice-president Baziuk has served as Vice-chair; she has also served on many committees including the Advocacy Committee and the Audit and Risk Management Committee through her role as an ASBA Board of Director.
