Empowering Success: Nine Alberta Students Honoured with Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Leadership, Resilience and Academic Excellence

Adelle spent much of her childhood in Uganda, where her parents served as missionaries. Upon returning to Canada, she entered a Francophone school without speaking the language—despite her Francophone heritage. From day one, she demonstrated exceptional adaptability, determination and a deep commitment to her school community. Adelle embraces challenges with enthusiasm and consistently seeks opportunities for growth. Her participation in the Pèlerinage de Vimy—an educational journey through France and Belgium exploring Canada’s role in WWI—reflects her intellectual curiosity, courage and desire to engage meaningfully with the world.

Ashton has shown a deep commitment to uplifting those around him. Initially known for his energy and ability to bring joy to his peers, he has grown into a thoughtful and engaged student leader. Ashton listens with intention, values collaboration and contributes meaningfully to his school community. Embracing academic challenges with determination and self-belief, he has transformed into a disciplined, confident learner. Ashton’s journey is a powerful example of the growth mindset in proving that with perseverance, meaningful change is always possible.

Not present at celebration

Max immigrated from Ukraine, carrying with him the challenges of cultural transition, language barriers and personal upheaval. He has met each with quiet determination and resilience. Despite these obstacles, Max quickly emerged as a peer leader. His innovative oil spill cleanup project earned a silver medal at the Calgary Youth Science Fair, showcasing both his intellect and initiative. In class, his calm presence and humility uplift those around him. With steadily rising grades and a clear commitment to growth, Max exemplifies perseverance, adaptability and the power of focused effort.

Though new to the school, Abigail has quickly become a cherished presence, known for her radiant positivity, kindness and strong sense of community. She approaches learning with resilience and determination, often going above and beyond through rewrites and extra support to achieve her goals. Her passion for learning is both admirable and inspiring. In group settings, Abigail listens with empathy, contributes thoughtfully, and uplifts others. Beyond the classroom, she demonstrates maturity and compassion through her involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Student Union, and the Interact Club—embodying a deep commitment to service and positive change.

Harper serves as a true ambassador, consistently taking initiative in projects that challenge the norm and drive meaningful change. Her involvement in the Net Zero Tiny Home project and the Sustainable Poultry initiative highlights not only her leadership and hands-on contribution, but also her maturity and forward-thinking mindset. Harper understands that strong communities are built on meaningful relationships, and she actively cultivates those connections within the school. Her enthusiasm, dedication and strong work ethic make her a role model among her peers—an inspiring presence who leads by example and elevates those around her.

Mattias is known for his kindness, reliability and deep commitment to community. Since Grade 7, he has volunteered with Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids, not only distributing lunches but also mentoring peers and fostering leadership. A quiet yet impactful leader, Mattias leads with humility and integrity, inspiring others through his actions. He actively supports school events and uplifts those around him. This year, he represented his school at Mount Royal University’s Middle School Student Well-Being Symposium, where he spoke thoughtfully about the power of connection and meaningful involvement in student life.

Tarena immigrated from India and has quickly become a vibrant and valued member of her school. Resourceful, kind-hearted and full of positive energy, she approaches learning with dedication and consistently strives for excellence. Adapting to a new country and education system, Tarena has shown remarkable resilience and optimism. A quiet leader in her Grade 6 class, she inspires peers through her determination and commitment to growth. Beyond academics, she volunteers as a school patrol, helps distribute lunches and supports younger students—offering friendship and guidance, especially to fellow newcomers. With outstanding attendance, a love of learning, and a spirit of service, Tarena truly embodies the heart of the Hillside community.
